The cold had a certain warmth to it. Worlds life among the layers of ice
Complex sounds alive found in the darkest rocks wet with winter s water
These hollows rough with age nature s hideouts were the source of inspiration
and sounds for the first full-length collaborative effort from Seaworthy
(Cameron Webb) and Taylor Deupree

Webb was plucked from a bushfire and flood-ridden east coast of an Australian
summer and deposited via a 20h flight into a New York covered in snow. From
wetlands abuzz with wildlife in the Australia to winter s wooded trails through
Pound Ridge the sonic environments couldn t have been more different

Working together in person has been an important point in Deupree s
collaboratinos lately. Much preferring the human interaction and local
landscapes over the soulless exchange of sound files over the internet. With
this point taken care of the pair struck out in a New York February to a 4000
acre nature preserve near Deupree s studio called Ward Pound Ridge a park rich
in history that supports a diverse range of plant and animal life. While the
cold of winter kept most of the animals quiet the landscape nonetheless teemed
with sounds. The local environment was hit badly by Hurricane Sandy a few months
prior and the remnants of broken trees and debris littered much of the woodland
area. Deupree and Webb spent three days on the trails recording sounds and
images which created direction and purpose for their album which was composed in
the evenings in the 12k studio

The resulting Wood Winter Hollow traces a rustic path of the days in the woods
with an equally natural soundset fronted by Webb on a nylon string guitar
Bells sticks melodica and the occasional analog synthesizer form the sonic
backdrop echoing the quiet but lively sounds of the winter forest. Endemic
field recordings including hydrophones placed in near-frozen streams became an
integral part of the work creating a subtle narrative that places the album in
its specific place in time

The subtle crackle of a slow flowing creek working its way through a cover of
ice and frozen leaves. The faint whistle of the pale leaves of the beech tree
that defy mother nature by clinging to their tree s spindling branches against
the push of winter winds. The cacophony of whispered raindrops running off
infrastructure and hundred year old stone structures. These are the sounds that
inspire and infuse Wood Winter Hollow. The rawness of winter in a world
clinging to fragments of warmth

M. Ostermeier s recent solo debut Percolate (Parvoart Jan 2010) featured
fragile Rhodes and acoustic piano melodies atop minimal downtempo electronics
and Labradford-esque guitar tones. Here on the seven-track mini-album Lakefront
the skeletal acoustic piano remains but the minimal beats have evaporated and
we are left with something more organic more haunting. Harold Budd is still an
apt reference for the piano fragments but the infusion of acoustic recordings
and darker guitar and electronics bring to mind Deaf Center and Library Tapes
The melancholic mood that builds throughout Lakefront evokes feelings of
nostalgia and regret. One theme present in Marc s mind as he was writing these
pieces was how the passing of time necessarily brings uncertainty to one s
recollection of the past an uncertainty that has its own poignancy

Marc lives in Baltimore in the US where these tracks were recorded during the
last few months of 2009. He was the main songwriter of the 1990 s
shoegazepost-rock band Should and is also the co-owner of Words On Music an
independent record label

The Rules of Another Small World is otherworldly yet strangely beautiful much
like the desolate Taiwanese San-Zhr Pod Village gracing the album cover

While elements of electroacoustic modern classical jazz glitch drone
ambient and even lounge weave in and out of the record s eleven compositions
The Rules of Another Small World is the opposite of an eclectic collection of
songs

Instead a cohesive album springs forth from the subtle commonalities in texture
and structure etched into every song. These commonalities derive in part from
the rules of the album title a reference to M. Ostermeier’s self-imposed
limitations adopted during the composition of these pieces

Despite its minimalistic leanings The Rules of Another Small World paints a
melodic freeform world full of detail. Slow melodic fragments dance in and out
of focus while small sounds both tinker about in the foreground and percolate
curiously in the aural architecture underneath

The superposition of unadorned piano melodies and unpredictable sonic
microorganisms lifts the melancholic darkness M. Ostermeier explored on
Lakefront (Hibernate 2010) revealing a tone that is more optimistic even
playful (think Cluster Benjamin Lew Carpet Musics Pawn or Opitope)

Towards that end most compositions are constructed in the three-minute pop-song
format blossoming with lives lasting only long enough to explore their
environment before they metamorphoses into something new

member of Remote Viewer The Boats and several other projects** Craig Tattersall
stokes ‘The Wooden Laser’ into action on this archival session of quiet dusty
ambient reel-to-reel rustles as The Archivist. Aside from his involvement with
Hood The Remote Viewer and The Boats Craig has made time over the last eleven
years to sketch these twelve barely-there tape vignettes capturing for
posterity the presence of ghostly melodies shrouded in a rich swirl of ferric
interference. Operating in a hazy zone somewhere behind the shadows of Pole
William Basinski and Wanda Group these pieces make a virtue of tape’s
infidelities and sensitivity to sleight of hand caressing warm bass shapes and
fragments of lingering phrases which seem to flit in the half-light like dust

their way through Disappearance the first collaboration album between 12k s
Taylor Deupree and pioneering electronic composer and pianist Ryuichi Sakamoto
The two began their musical dialogue in 2006 when Deupree was invited to remix a
song from Sakamoto s album Chasm. World Citizen was the song and it sparked
continued collaboration as Deupree contributed to two of Sakamoto s activist
projects: Chain Music and KizunaWorld (as a trio with Sakamoto and Stephen
Vitiello.) With the convenience of both artists living in New York they kept in
touch released music on 12k (Willits + Sakamoto s Ocean Fire) and in April of
2012 performed live together at John Zorn s club The Stone. It was this concert
that planted the seeds for Disappearance

The initial tracks for Disappearance were recorded at Sakamoto s studio in New
York City during rehersals for the April concert. The two immediately entered
the same sonic mindframe that lead to hours of concentrated hushed music
Sakamoto s piano playing both traditional and prepared emerged as perhaps some
of his most beautifully sparse in recent years letting the sound of the room
and shuffle of chairs take an active roll in the recording. Only the most
minimum of essential notes accentuated by silences and the scraping of the
piano s strings plays alongside Deupree s nuanced passages created with
analogue synthesizers strings and found objects. These warm human tones
became the means of communication between the two artists who effortlessly
created a musical language

The five tracks that make up Disappearance are delicate and composed however
they re not all peacefulness and placidity. Micro-tuned edges bursts of noise
percussive prepared piano and the warble of old reel-to-reel tape keep the mood
grounded and warm turning it inward and asking the listener to reflect on their
path. Curl To Me the album s final piece is highlighted by the sounds of
Ichiko Aoba a major up-and-coming singersongwriter from Tokyo. Both Sakamoto
and Deupree have recently worked with Aoba in Japan and wanted her presence felt
on the album. Emphasizing the solitude and stillness of the recordings Aoba
provided both her voice and the almost disturbingly intimate sound of her own
heartbeat

Disappearance is a soundtrack for holding breaths. Sakamoto and Deupree lay down
worn roads but don t leave signs for a journey woven together by the quiet
celebration of the fragility of nature and life
