From Scott Morgan: “This album gets its name from an odd little ocean side park
that borders industry and the Vancouver port authority and lays claim to being
the birthplace of the city.

“In a way, Sketches from New Brighton it is a continuation of a dialogue with my
environment that started with First Narrows (kranky 2004) and continued with the
Strathcona Variations EP (Ghostly International 2009). It is not a rigorous
“study” per se, but more a series of sketches, loose interpretations of the
spaces I inhabit as well as an acknowledgement of their influence on my
practice. These are my impressions, a kind of sketch of New Brighton and the
surrounding area in an abstract form.”

This sixth full length album from kranky mainstay Scott Morgan sees his pulsing
compositions gently unfolding in the understated fashion that has become his
trademark. He designs a sonic architecture, slowly constructing, making subtle
additions and subtractions, until an almost tactile virtual space is formed.
Inside these spaces an aural feng shui is achieved, where less is more, where
every element is in its place, and where maximum harmony is attained through the
masterly placement of sound.

Sublunar is the first full-length release from Kane Ikin who is also known as
one half of the duo Solo Andata. Sublunar follows Kane’s solo debut Contrail
(7″, 12k2022) picking up where that EP left off and pushing the boundaries
outward in every direction into denser, deeper, wetter and more decayed terrain.

The word “sublunar” can be read to contain many conceptual layers important to
the album. It is music about moonlight, darkness, the faintest hint of light and
shadow…. Moons locked in orbit, repetition, gravity, weight, pressure…
Subconscious, subliminal, distant, deteriorated signals, like radio waves lost
in a noisy haze of transmission… and about dust, noise and oversaturation.

Kane conveys all of these ideas with little thought for technique, instead
putting all of his energy into, as he puts it, “Quality of the sound, over
quality of the sound.” His disregard for any “proper” recording techniques
leaves Sublunar with waves tape hiss, buried details and sounds warped beyond
recognition. Unlike other work Kane is known for there is a strong sense of
rhythm on this album. Mechanical, yet natural, beats pulse in and out of time,
washed away and then restructured by pulling the tail end of tape echoes forward
into the mix emphasizing their warm, analogue flaws and giving the album a
semi-structured feel, like the backbone of a long-dead creature buried in the
earth.

Sublunar is Kane running free in his studio and, quite characteristically,
utilizing nearly everything he can touch as an instrument; from grimey 78′s,
uncovered from his grandfather’s shed, to early drum machines and analogue
synthesizers, reel-to-reel recorders and anything within arm’s reach that can be
hit, plucked, or bowed. Kane has a wonderful talent of turning his immediate
world into a soundtrack for existance that speaks on a near-primal level.

The clock is slowing and time is held like a breath as daylight falls from the
horizon. Waking hours spin to a slow finale through a subconscious haze flecked
with deep autumnal reds and quiet yellows. Memories gradually transform into
moonlit ripples on a lake until the shadows emerge and slither across the
surface of the water. I shift my body weight to the other side of where I lay.

A distant radio hisses like wind through dead grasses as I move past crisp
woodland branches that snap and crack as I seek a place of shelter. Hundreds of
unseen eyes, hidden behind tree trunks and bracken, curiously trace my movement.
I crouch down to rest as a hare approaches and briefly stops to tilt her head to
make eye contact with me. I hold my breath and my feet and fingers sink into the
decaying soil. My balance shifts and my tired eyelids open for a moment.

Turning my head I see an opening close by partially masked by shadows. I count
silently to myself and then cautiously venture out into this unknown open space.
Here the snow-covered ground rises above me in ascending steps arcing through
the plains. As my breath slows I follow the faint constellations of star
clusters that hang buoyantly above me. I am softly breathing and almost asleep,
unsure of where I am.

Cresting the hill the sound of running water carries me back into the trees once
more. I’m enticed by glistening droplets of near-frozen dew on the fallen logs
that conceal the singing insects residing on the woodland floor. I pull tightly
on my bedclothes as warm harmonic tones ease across my frost-kissed ears until
broken twigs underfoot break my state of slumber. Back now, my pillow is
familiar and warm.

The tiny fraction of time between waking and sleep, with no distinct perception
of reality is a moment to be held and absorbed for as long as possible. It is
the ontologically fleeting moment of the present, as our heavy eyelids close and
our pulse slows, that is the inspiration inside the music of Faint, the new
album on 12k by Taylor Deupree.

Shpongle is an English psychedelic downtempo/psybient music project formed in 1996. The group includes Simon Posford (aka Hallucinogen) and Raja Ram (one third of The Infinity Project). They are credited as one of the main contributors to the invention of Psybient – a genre combining world music with psychedelic trance and ambient. Their musical style combines traditional music from all over the globe and vocals with contemporary western synthesizer-based psychedelic music. When asked to describe Shpongle’s music, Posford has responded that it is “like nothing you’ve ever heard before.”Shpongle’s first track, “Vapour Rumours”, was released on TIP Records’ Infinite Excursions compilation in 1996.Their debut album, Are You Shpongled?, was released in 1998 on Twisted Records. Their next album will be released sometime in 2013.
Posford is generally responsible for the synthesizers, studio work, and live instrumentation while Raja Ram contributes broad musical concepts and flute arrangements. Raja Ram stated in an interview that “Shpongle” is an umbrella term for feeling positive and euphoric emotions.[4] Shpongle’s music is heavily influenced by psychedelic experiences and frequently makes use of sonic textures that approximate psychedelic states as well as vocal samples relating to consciousness expansion, hallucinations, and altered states of awareness. For example, the track, “A New Way to Say ‘Hooray,’” contains a vocal sample of Terence McKenna describing the effects of DMT, and the most popular song from their first album ‘Divine Moments of Truth’ alludes to DMT in its initialism.

Enigma is an electronic musical project founded in Germany by Michael Cretu, David Fairstein and Frank Peterson in 1990. The Romanian-born Cretu conceived the Enigma project while working in Germany, but has based his recording studio A.R.T. Studios in Ibiza, Spain, since the early 1990s until May 2009, where he has recorded all of Enigma’s studio releases to date. Cretu is both the composer and the producer of the project. His former wife, pop singer Sandra, often provided vocals on Enigma tracks. Jens Gad co-arranged and played guitar on three of the Enigma albums. Peter Cornelius also contributed to Enigma during the 1990s.
Seven studio albums have been produced under the name of the project.

In our, boxed, on-demand world where accessibility and recallability rule we can
often forget the importance of the unpredictable or the joy of true discovery.
Our lives are increasingly shaped by systems and patterns; downloaded, linked,
and stored, that help us live, tell us when to go outside and what we will find
when we get there. The mystery of our every day slowly seeps out of our lives
like photograph bled of its color by the sun. There are fewer questions and too
many answers.

The Endless Change Of Colour exists somewhere between our future and the
mistakes and accidents weve made along the way. It is a celebration of both the
system and the unexpected. Marsen Jules latest work is a generative music piece
upon a single phrase of an old jazz record split into three audio streams. These
streams are transformed into loops which break the original instrumentation down
into sound resembling pure waves, harmonics and overtones.These loops play to
different time signatures to create phasing patterns that continuously move and
dance around each other in a constantly-evolving lattice of sound. Despite it
being based on a very strict and limited set of rules the music could, in
theory, be endless and ever-changing.

Here, the listeners discovery is a quiet and engaged one. Ripples and pulses
set within a field of color that sometimes feels like water, sometimes like air
and sometimes like glass. Electronic tones hum with warmth and the softness of
slumber. The patterns are there, familiar to our modern ears, but theyre not
always what they seem. The wandering mind steers this one along more than the
generative grid on which it was based and The Endless Change Of Colour becomes
exactly as its title suggests.
